Summary
Kelmscott Manor, located in the village of Kelmscott, Oxfordshire, is the house that poet, designer, craftsman and socialist William Morris created as a place of beauty and peace. The manor is open to the public today as a museum and also offers accommodation in its four apartments.
In 1896 Morris began restoring his country home at Kelmscott House. Morris' intention was to combine artistry with usefulness and he succeeded brilliantly. Kelmscott House was based on a traditional medieval architecture with beautiful decorations. The building has been preserved largely unchanged since it was completed in 1898. It contains original furnishings dating from about 1860 onwards - including items made by Morris himself - as well as tapestries, stained glass, and paintings which had been selected by Morris for their hand-made quality or their decorative value.
